![]() ''Someone Like You,'' falls into the category of good enough - it will entertain teen-age girls, but its reliance on the conventions of so many young-adult novels pegs it as a genre piece. They get to the hospital and she has her baby.Arah Dessen's first novel, ''That Summer,'' was so good that adults could read it with at least as much pleasure as teen-agers. Sarah tries to get her to the hospital as soon as possible, Macon gives them a ride. Scarlett is almost due. They go to prom and right when Scarlett is dancing her water breaks. Prom week is almost up and they decide there going to go. Macon and Sarah get in a car accident and realizes that his not worth it. She would skip school every other day with Macon until she got caught by her mom. Sarah stats being more rebels then she was. After a few months Macon what’s to take it to another level Sarah doesn’t want to but she thinks is she has sex with him he won’t brake up with her. Sarah starts to like Macon and they go out. They both try to keep each other until Macon comes up. Well the two best friends try to battle the problem with out nobody knowing. Days past by Scarlett found out that she’s pregnant, she thinks about having an abortion but then again she thinks the baby is the only thing she has of Michel. After a coup0le hours they go to the funeral they see a lot of girls from school crying for him. Sarah doesn’t know why his under her bed. The next day Sarah walks in to Scarlett room and sees Macon (Michel’s best friend) under the bed. ![]() After all of that happen Scarlett is at home crying to death. Hours past by and Sarah decides to call her mom to come get her at camp. After a few days Sarah gets a call from Scarlett saying that Michel has died in a car accident, and she wants her to come home. Sarah goes to girl camp and Scarlett stays home. It was the 1st summer Sarah and Scarlett split for a whole summer. The book is bout to girls that are best friends, there both in JR. The book “Someone like you” is a really good because it talks about how two best friends try to stick together after all the problems that are going around. For those who have read and enjoyed Jacqueline Wilson, Melina Marchetta, Ann Brashares - then you shall enjoy these books too. And, of course, this novel is about friendship - about the bond between two female friends that has lasted since childhood and will last for many years to come. At times it's a bit gritty, and at times you want to slap Halley, the protagonist, and tell her that she's making a mistake. All things which I think are sadly brushed over in the "I-found-my-true-love-at-16-and-he-wasn't-human" themed books. It does deal with relationship issues - that all important question "is he worth my virginity?" and the coming to terms with your identity, developing the confidence to stand up for yourself and make mature decisions. ![]() It is also refreshing to read something aimed at the teenage market that does not focus on vampires, werewolves, angels or other supernatural beings, but instead deals with real teenage girls in realistic situations. It feels quite American - with mentions of camp and prom and Thanksgiving, but I do not think that should put people off. ![]() This is the first book I have read by her. Sarah Dessen is a well-renowned US author, but little known here in New Zealand.
